men who exercise a lot as teens produce more testosterone & change the size of their vocal cords?

It's an interesting question. Without thinking too much about it, it could just as easily be a selection effect: men with more testosterone are more likely to become jocks. I don't claim that this is definitely the case, but seems plausible at least.

Anxiety raises the timbre of voices in general, and nerds had more to be socially anxious about.

Some combination of exposure to different media and different adults at an early age, and whatever it is that causes gay guys to have the characteristic voice. Note, on that latter, that I've met some who could turn it on and off at will.

When I was a preschooler some people thought I had an English accent and were surprised to learn that my parents didn't. I don't believe I have ever had an English accent... but I used words most people my age didn't, and some perceived that as "an English accent."

Let me lay it out for you bro. It’s a display of being part of the group. It is a different style of language. Different expressions, everything. Talking like a bro helps you fit in. Then you become a bro. It’s a social game that nerds don’t know how to play. It’s a sub culture.
