I'm not sure that happiness should be the ultimate goal of people. I mean, being happy is just a feeling. Shouldn't we strive to be better people for oneself and society and not the maintenance of one's life for the purpose of a single feeling?

happiness was never the point and as far as i can tell thinking happiness is the point is a modern western pathology

As far as I can tell from doing introspection with lots of coaching clients, something like neverending oneness and bliss is a terminal goal for many people. You can call the goal something like "Congruence" here - but the congruence still seems to be to some sort of felt sense.

Yeah, this seems consistent with what I've heard about e.g. core transformation. There's something I'm confused about here in the direction of wireheading, or like, whether humans meaningfully have preferences about the territory as opposed to just the map.

This is part of the heaven vs. enlightenment focus distinction I was trying to get at in this tweet. There are people who are on the enlightenment side that think that wanting to DO something to achieve oneness is the actual map/territory mistake.https://twitter.com/mattgoldenberg/status/1115576370103562242 …

Matt Goldenberg @mattgoldenberg1/ At the extremes, people have one of four life goals: To achieve a state of nothingness (himayana enlightenment), to achieve a state of oneness (mahayana enlightenment), to achieve a utopia of meaning (galts gulch), or to achieve a utopia of togetherness (hivemind). pic.twitter.com/kP4W9n3muGShow this thread1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
Note that both heaven and enlightenment are about the strive for congruence/alignment. However, one is changing yourself to be congruent with the world, and one is changing the world to be congruent with yourself.

Ooh, thanks, these two tweets helped something click for me. Hmm. Off the top of my head I think my position here is roughly "enlightenment is the only path to heaven"?
