Do people ever intentionally end or call off friendships that don't fit the way they end romantic relationships?

I did this once and it was the most awkward thing I've ever done. We didn't talk for 8 years afterwards :/
I didn't quite decide, it just kinda happened. She said "it feels like you don't want to talk to me anymore" and I said "yeah, I don't." I'm glad I did it because that friendship really wasn't good for me at the time, and think most people would benefit from ending friendships.
