This doesn’t make it not-Buddhism, but it does make it not at all The One Correct Buddhism. It’s a quite extreme outlier among Buddhisms.

It’s also one that I, personally, don’t care for. It seems to work for many people, up to a point at least. But it’s important to recognize that it is only one approach among many, and that other versions are very different, and may work better for at least some people.

It would be nice to have a collection of different versions steelmanned in similar colloquial language

Well, each does have its advocates, who do present it in reasonably contemporary English

I guess what’s generally missing is clear comparisons. That’s difficult because few people have practiced disparate systems deeply enough. And actually few people even understand their own systems clearly enough to explain their fundamental principles.

This makes me think the distinctions might need to be presented as dialogues. So you could present a similar core engine of Dzogchen (if that's a meaningful notion) and then you & Romeo could ask each other clarifying questions: "Ahh, so does that step involve...?" etc

Other newer schools I'm very excited to see connected in with all of this include
@meditationstuff's recent work—he's been making bold claims lately! https://meditationstuff.wordpress.com/2019/04/07/2000-hours-to-full-classical-enlightenment-plus-risks/ … https://meditationstuff.wordpress.com/2019/02/09/give-me-money-please-immortal-institutions-and-meditation-protocols-fundraising-and-soft-launch/ …pic.twitter.com/5POkpr0gjK

Along with
@BentinhoMassaro, who I haven't looked into much yet myself but I've heard some good things about. He seems... maybe monist? But again, I really don't know yet. This is maybe a decent place to start for a map of what he's doing:https://www.trinfinityacademy.com/essentials/self-realization-index/ …1 reply 0 retweets 0 likes -

Bentinho claims he can control the weather :/ Not a great sign. This is where I first heard about him:https://gurumag.com/tech-bro-guru-inside-the-sedona-cult-of-bentinho-massaro/ …

Welp. As I said, hadn't investigated it. What a mess. Seems there's also this article, which points out the original author had had his demise as the bottom line before ever getting involved. Still seems there are some self-enclosed loops / guru stuff. https://medium.com/@avera.media/cult-mania-inside-the-attack-on-bentinho-massaro-part-1-881b5628b89a …pic.twitter.com/NAIBjzv6za

Huge mess. I read a lot of Scofield's stuff in the fall to learn more about abusive guru / cult dynamics. The Guru Papers (as summarized e.g. at https://meaningness.com/metablog/guru-papers-monism-control …) covers the same material better, but it was still really eye-opening. Looots of sex scandals.
