Hmm this makes it seem possible to be materialistic toward information/friends/etc. Which I guess is an intuitive idea, but only in retrospect (at least for me).

Materialism isn't about what you do, it's about how and why you do it. A materialist orients towards the world as a bunch of stuff to collect.
