This. The EA orientation towards the felt experience of suffering and, by extension, compassion is so fucked. The president of Stanford EA told me he'd noticed other EAs feeling cold + calculating where he felt warm + compassionate, and wondered if he should be colder.https://twitter.com/Malcolm_Ocean/status/1116967983539269632 …

Btw, it seems many EAs can't deal with their own suffering either, so they end up counterproductively sacrificing each other's well-being, rather than doing what you describe in the podcast: simultaneously considering people you see (homeless or friends) AND your long-term plan.

To me it feels unfair to call this "The EA orientation". Some EAs are cold. Not all of us are!

Listen man, I write on Twitter to avoid needing to fully disclaim and caveat all of my claims :| "The EA" doesn't mean "literally every EA," it means (my experience of) EA culture / the EA egregore.

Similarly when women say "men are X" they don't mean literally all men and it's a huge distraction from their point to respond "not all men" which is the whole point of the phrase "not all men"

I'm not a fan of the "not all men" hashtag or whatever. Nobody likes negative generalizations about their own group, and I think that's totally fair to complain about. I suppose it depends on context though. And whether the original statement is meant as an off-the-cuff 1/
