in my younger years, i felt that the ideal super bowl halftime act would be korn. but as you mature as a person, you eventually realize that chingy ft. korn would be even better. your first answer is rarely the correct one

it's not that the advice is "wrong," more like 1) only a person who was already doing this would really understand what it means. most advice is a verbal tag summarizing an experience and the words are mostly useless without the experience the tag is pointing to

      2) why are you even telling me this, do you think you're better than me or what. not that hard to tell when people are giving advice to posture / occupy a particular "wise" role, because it gets optimized for sounding "wise" instead of for actually helping people

(meanwhile i am optimizing for sounding as interesting as possible to attract the attention of interesting people, i hope it's pretty clear this is what i'm doing, i am in no way trying to hide this)

generally speaking i wish that instead of giving me advice people would tell me the experience that the advice is coming from. like instead of "i learned that you really have to listen to people, y'know" tell me about how you finally started listening to your gf

I feel the exact opposite about stories. I just want the short version of why, i.e. "listening to people is good because..." so I can think of where to apply (or where I could've applied) the advice for myself. No anchoring, and easier to filter out "benefits" I don't want.

Hmm. I think short versions promise a lot of value but mostly don't deliver. E.g. feels like I could write a book on why listening to people is good, and reducing it to "listening to people is good because they feel understood" or w/e doesn't really communicate the thing.

Yeah, I think I would just get the cliffs notes of that book, but I see what you mean. "Every" source is going to be too long or too short, I want to find the shortest possible message that gets the point across for me.
