I've been reading books out of order all my life because that's how I found them in shops & libraries. As such, I've got to disagree with the idea a book can only be reviewed if read in the order the author intended because that's not everyone's reading experience.

A book should be able to stand on its own because that's how some people find them. A major publication should probably be sourcing reviewers who've read the first, but I don't think it's fair to say the opinions of reviewers who've not read the whole thing are invalid.
