This December, the team decided to spread the word and give insight about how to create a competitive and *independent* engine from the ground-up with by design. Every day a new post. If you're wondering what's wrong with google:

How Web Standards Work 1. design a flawed API (it's fine! APIs are hard) 2. ship it in the most-used browser, despite objections 3. get cross-browser working group to fix the API 4. oops, too late, that would break the web

Received an press release via email, apparently they are shutting down. Which is the right consequence if you look at their stock price. The reason is of course that "some users questioned our mission" which is as close to "we messed up" as it will probably get.

Either the new Off-Facebook activity tool isn't working, or and anti-tracking is doing its job...

Chrome: We're going to implement WebUSB All other browsers: Now hang on, this seems insec- Chrome: TOO LATE! We have features that rely on it now so we also can't get rid of it and change it. Web standards are dead. Chrome is our new master.

My colleague appeared on the latest edition of the podcast. Great insight into why at Cliqz we build on and why privacy is at our core:

Puppeteer v2.1.0 is out! 🔥 ➡️ Chromium 80 ➡️ puppeteer.launch({product: 'firefox'}) Puppeteer can now talk to a real, unpatched Firefox binary. You no longer need to install puppeteer-firefox separately!

`puppeteer.launch` now accepts a `product` option which can be set to `'firefox'`.

The reason Google’s new search design can claim to “boldy” label ads while making them difficult to distinguish has to do with something called pre-attentiveness.

This v2 release looks very exciting, it solves many pain points of the monorepo workflow. It looks like it might even supersede ? Or make it a plugin, which would simplify things. Looking forward to trying it out on my projects 🚀

If you’ve seen articles advising you to turn off Intelligent Tracking Prevention in Safari, don’t do it. That is terrible advice. Even if we had no fix for the issues recently disclosed by Google, cookies are a way worse tracking vector than a flaw in ITP could ever be.

That’s why browsers call Private Mode by the name of Forget Mode, which hopefully explains better what it does. Sadly, we know from users that a lot of them think Private Mode is really private, so some never leave it. In Cliqz we aim for all tabs to be private by default.

An anti-tracking feature actually enabled tracking, the opposite of what it's meant to do.
