imagine if your job as a coder was ONLY to refactor messy code and turn it into clean beautiful code might be supremely satisfying, at least as a daydream of an fun task to get paid for as a programmer who generally has to leave things in an ugly-but-it-works state

One thing to keep in mind: today's clean beautiful code is tomorrow's messy code. As we all learn more effective ways, standards change, etc code eventually becomes messy even if at first it was really well done. Especially as new things are added, etc.

so true! I tend to judge refactors by clarity, not size or speed or coolness - a refactor can often be just a final renaming of vars and funcs to more clearly say what they really do, more than changing the logic at all, plus I remove all my swears in the comments lolol
