Hey #gamedev friends! What kind of touch controls would you suggest to use with a 2D platformer game? I don't want some kind of virtual controller. The more complex my control becomes, the more difficult it becomes to make it intuitive. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi, I'm looking for an intuitive control scheme to use in a complex platformer game. But what I don't want are button overlays because I believe it isn't required and because they waste limited space.

If you don't want button overlays you would need to setup a tutorial style intro to walk players through the core mechanics of gameplay. Clicking on items, how to walk, or attack, etc. Without player education or a clear UI you're going to run into problems.
