I've had several conversations with employees of YouTube recently, and the subject of bettering the platform comes up in each and every one of them. My one suggestion to them is to remove the dislike button.

I see this mostly because there's very little value in the button itself. There's no critical feedback as to why something is just liked. So constructive criticism cannot be obtained off of it.

Additionally, if the button was removed then the media wouldn't be able to report on videos being the most disliked in history which is then used as an attack on the community as a whole

I don't have a solution for what would replace it, or if anything should replace it. But no other social media platform has one, and they operate just fine. Put on YouTube the dislike button is used more as a weapon than anything else. @TeamYouTube

It does serve a purpose, but mostly for their algorithms. Knowing what people think of videos allows them to tailor things to the users for maximum engagement. Likes and dislikes aren't really there for the community's benefit. Comments are much more useful in that regard.

      Then it should be hidden.

Comments that provide actual input, as I mentioned, are a lot more useful for telling people where they might improve than "I don't like this thing you did." I imagine everyone would agree on that point.

If someone is manually removing them or not approving them, then they will probably still see the input. People who shut down comments are clearly not interested in real input and will probably shut down likes as well. Dislikes weren't likely to get through to such a person.

Very valid point...so what does removing a dislike button really accomplish?

Well, I do agree that it is often used as a weapon instead of as genuine input. You see a similar phenomena on reddit where someone goes and down-votes everything a person has said and, in large numbers, it can get insane. It can be more about public shaming than about input.
