Yet we are all from here, having shared existential origins and destinations as human beings on this our 'good Earth'. Yes, the piece is thought-provoking, especially in light of the fact that there are millions of fellow human beings searching still for a place to call home.

Yes, people might not ask it in a mean way, but there is an assumption in the question that is quite undermining. Someone (Caucasian woman) asked me this question today, and when I asked in return, where she is “originally” from her answer was a shocked expression!

Born in Canada. From Canada. My ancestors from Iceland & Yugoslavia. By heritage proud. Intriguing to know where my fellow Canadians are from. As Canadian citizens visiting other countries the answer is then Canada. For all of us. No racism just curiosity. Relax.

And I think most people understand that it rarely comes from a place of explicit or overt racism. The issue is more so would I be asked this question all the time if I was white? Have we conditioned people to feel like white people are from here but not us
