This would be a very disappointing development. This bill is a only one step in the legislative change that is needed — it helps advance respect, reconciliation, and certainty. Let us get it done.https://twitter.com/globeandmail/status/1133528651792695296 …

But are we not able to do this as a nation without relying on the UN? This bill is necessary and this level of recognition is overdue, but not because the UN tells us it is, rather because we know inside ourselves that it is. We don't need the UN to be genuine.

Exactly. The UN should be abolished.

This is just a glimpse into an Scheer Conservative gov’t. They will target fact-based decision making, immigrants & refugees, the environment, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, Indigenous peoples, visible minorities and the poorest & most vulnerable in our society. #cdnpoli

Oh but Jody's dad assures us that we only need to live through one term of conservatives in order to get Jody in the Liberal leadership seat! Jody's dad sure has it all figured out. Maybe Jody will do us all a favor and retire.

Commenters who are attacking the UN: UNDRIP is primarily the work of Indigenous people, not UN bureaucrats. It was then endorsed by most countries. It is endorsed in the Truth & Reconciliation Commission report.

The UN sucks. UNDRIP is one of the few good things to come out of them. My worry is that the UN might start to imagine it has some sovereignty here . Or that differing to them as opposed to organizing locally or in more local governments could negatively impact sovereignty .

Conservatives need to detail why they would not support this bill? Conforming with international agreements is a base line for Canada to participate and then defend Canadian interests abroad.

Confirming to intl agreements is not advisable, especially if it is a one-sided affair as the UN is. This is a red herring. Canada needs to be a leader, when it comes to reconciliation, by a real dialogue and solution finding.

I have to respectfully disagree with you, in principle. Why can’t Canadian parliament introduce laws that don’t require conformance to an outside political influence? Can’t our sovereign government make rational and civil legislation? Aside from the current group of course.

It should be a Canadian declaration by Canadians and First Nations. Not by the UN.
