But in many of those years we had a candidate reach 270 on election night. I was in that Grant Park crowd in 2008 and distinctly remember CNN calling it. If by "final" results you mean other states' results trickling in later... then sure.

usually, the race is 'called' when wonky political folks use a lot of precinct data to essentially predict with certainty that the votes are there for a candidate. The final count is never actually known on election night.
