“A one-time tax on the wealth of just 500 people, taking only one quarter of their capital gains in a single year, could save the earth.” — Anand Giridharadas https://twitter.com/anandwrites/status/1212723939836858368?s=21 …https://twitter.com/anandwrites/status/1212447717710008328?s=21 …

I’m in favor of a wealth tax. But for purposes of discussion, we need to distinguish between *income* & *assets* (wealth). A billlionaire worth $10b has $10b in assets. They don’t get $10b every year. They’ll take income from what the $10bn earns in investments...

Even if all these guys were giving 5-10%, it would be to organizations of their choice. It’s an undemocratic way to shape/run society, it’s ill-gotten power abused.

Buffet gives far more per his INCOME than this. What he is worth includes the value of the businesses, not his own money. He's a HUGE donor to Planned Parenthood and other causes. We probably need to break out personal riches from holdings in productive wealth.

Giving to non-profits in a year vs wealth held a given year is a valid measure. The 1% are the 1% because of the wealth they hold, not the income they earn in any given year.

if each of them made $60,000/yr: Ellison: $0 Page: $0 Brin: $0 Bezos: $60 D. Koch: $60 C. Koch: $300 Zuckerberg: $420 Bloomberg: $900 Gates: $1,560 Buffet: $2,340

No. The % is for their networth. Now you compare it to their income which is much lower. Someone making 60k/year should have a networth of multiple 100k - depending on age and many other factors. That is what you need to apply the % to - not the income.
