Genuine question. Got any examples, say, from the last 40 years, where a word permanently took on its diametric opposite meaning? I mean, "bad" meant good (or cool) for about 2 yrs in the 1970s, then evaporated.

"Really", "very" (from "verily") and such had similar histories. The intensifier treadmill is real. Myself, I'd say meta-literally was very fun BEFORE dictionaries added it officially -- no intensifier could be greater than saying it actually happened. Now, they ruined the fun.
