We don't do any screening, but if we get an abuse report, we will investigate. ProtonMail cannot be used for illegal activities.

I don't understand. You mean you scan the mails of users to see if they comply to the terms of service?
-
No, we can't read email contents. If we receive an abuse report of illegal activity, we may suspend the account based off the evidence.
-
you're able to discontinue your services to the offending party. Am I right?
-
Yes, our ToS allows us to suspend accounts engaged in activities which are illegal in Switzerland.
-
Would violating Swiss speech laws be cause for suspension? Denying the Armenian Genocide like
@doguperincek did? https://treaties.un.org/pages/ViewDetails.aspx?src=TREATY&mtdsg_no=IV-2&chapter=4&lang=en … -
IOW, what counts as "illegal in Switzerland"? Would willfully obstructing or disrupting traffic be suspension cause? https://www.admin.ch/opc/en/classified-compilation/19370083/index.html#a237 …
-
@ProtonMailHelp Appreciate if you clarify above: as a@ProtonMail user do speech laws & other non-abusive Swiss crimes risk ban?#FreeSpeech -
If it is illegal according to Swiss law, we are obligated to not permit ProtonMail to be used for such activities.

If inciting violence is against PM terms, does that mean that Antifa members would have their account suspended?
-
Anybody that incites violence (illegal under Swiss law), could have their account suspended, especially if we get a court order.
-
But did you get a court order in that case? No. You're acting as a judge and taking arbitrary decisions. You cannot be trusted anymore.
-
If we waited for a court order each time to ban spammer, phishing, ransomware, ISIS, etc accounts, we wouldn't have a functioning service.

And how would you know that
don't tell me screenshots because everyone can make that up... -
We do not comment on the status of individual accounts, but we're pointing out that our ToS prohibits illegal activities.
-
You won't put in your TOS something that you can't enforce. My question is still how R U going to know who's engaging in these activities?
-
attaching your email to a poster instructing people to “hospitalize your local Antifa member” is inciting violence lol
-
Is that what happened? Pictures please.

See the tweet we quoted at the top of this thread.
