That's actually a red candy cane stripe on the sword. Link was going to be a magical barber in this game, cutting enemy's hair to make princess Zelda's hair longer

Oooh... this looks great! It's got a similar aesthetic to Link's Awakening's spritework too, which makes it even more enticing. Bit of a shame it never saw the light of day.
