Try giving advice that's usually bad. By the fact that the person hasn't solved the problem yet, you can guess that the usual advice fails.
@WordOfLanguage If you really are in a situation where the usual advice fails, reversing it can be a good heuristic.

A useful middle ground is the tarot solution: give completely random advice, framed in an ambiguous way, in order to allow the person asking to project the solution they have already figured out upon it & notice that they've solved the problem for the first time.
