Chacma baboons display a variety of behaviours, such as grooming. Grooming is integral to primate social lives. It's a key way to build & maintain relationships between individuals. Grooming also looks very relaxing - if the video below is to go by! 👇

Wild vervet monkeys rely on associative learning rather than rule-based learning during a classic reversal learning task adapted for use in the field. Field results are consistent with those found for captive monkeys.

This video of chacma baboons mobbing a leopard shows this well: lots of noise and numbers! Male baboons have v. large canines so you wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of them! (Dw, the leopard is chased off but escapes)

Baboons also mob! Mobbing is an anti-predator response in many animals (i.e. birds & primates). Chacma's will mob predators such as leopards & cheetahs - this involves lots of alarm barking, staring, and making threats (such as slapping the ground) @ the focus of the mob... 👇

Trying to put together a list of behaviour developmental milestones for rhesus macaques (e.g. first appearance of facial expressions such as play face and behaviours such as grooming. If anyone’s got any useful references or examples in rhesus or related species please comment

Grooming also has other benefits... Close grooming associations may be used to reduce stress in times of social instability. And females may maintain 'friendships' with certain males to reduce the risk of aggression, such as infanticide.

So, what do the baboons do at night? They, ah - *checks abstract* - rest. And, ah, in some nights they are a bit more restless than in others. 😴🐒 New paper on chacma baboon nightly activity patterns in the Soutpansberg mountains!

chacma baboons have cheek pouches where they can temporarily store food! (As do all cercopithecines) You'll know when they're full because they become very pobvious - like a hamster! 🐹 What a handy way to hoard food

Chacma's have also been observed to eat soil. This deliberate consumption is called geophagy. Soil might seem a strange thing to eat, but it's surprisingly common among animals (and even humans!). It's thought to aid in preventing gastrointestinal distress/supplement minerals

Baboons opportunistically eat animal matter such as eggs, insects and small vertebrates. Chacma baboons have been observed to predate on young antelope, lizards, & birds. 🥚🦗🦎 They will eat just about anything (including things they certainly shouldn't, such as human trash)

Continuing on about our , we're talking about chacma baboon diets! Chacma baboons are omnivores and are opportunistic! Their diets are diverse and flexible; they may eat fruits, seeds, grasses, roots, & flowers/leaves, but also consume animal matter. 🍎🌿🥜

Interesting video filmed in Kruger National Park involving a chacma baboon interacting with a lion club! The female appears to have taken the cub and carried it up into tree cover. 👇

All baboons are native to Africa & Arabia. Chamca baboons occur toward the south of continental Africa - range from South Africa north into Angola, Zambia, and Mozambique. They roam in large multi-male & multi-female groups, across a variety of habitats 🐵
