3/ DOC remain concerned for the pod given the time they have been in the inlet, and that at each low tide there is a risk one or more of the pod may strand. The tidal range within the inlet has been decreasing. The tidal forecast shows from Thursday the tidal range will increase.

2/ The response today was based on several concerns. There has been and remains a risk the orca may strand given the shallow depth of the inlet at low tide. In addition, the large male orca has shown signs of decline or stress, including a drooping dorsal fin and less activity.

1/ has called off the attempt to gently shepherd the orca out of Pāuatahanui Inlet for today. 4 boats were involved in trying to shepherd the whales – three Ngāti Toa iwi members’ boats and a DOC boat. A fifth boat was also at the mouth of the Porirua Arm.

3/ Please remember that only essential travel is allowed under Alert Level 4 and people should NOT go to the area to see the orca. DOC staff are working closely with who are ensuring Alert Level 4 requirements are being met.

Wellington District Police, and Project Jonah are aware of a pod of orca in Wellington. Please do not get into your cars to drive to see them. We are still in Alert Level 4 restrictions and this is not essential travel. Police are in place at checkpoints in the area.

We are aware of the orca pod in Pauatahanui Inlet and have had calls about it, but don't worry it is normal behaviour for orca to be in shallow water and they have been seen before in the inlet.
