    Rapidly taking control over the north, Ho Chi Minh’s forces took Hanoi on 19 August. But the French were not ready to concede defeat in the region. After the Potsdam Conference, British and French expeditionary forces were deployed in Saigon to re-consolidate colonial rule.

    In 1940, the French Vichy government ceded control of Hanoi and Saigon to Japan. When Japan surrendered in 1945, a power vacuum developed in Vietnam into which the Viet Minh forces, the revolutionary forces of Ho Chi Minh in the North of Vietnam, sprung.
