I try to keep party politics out of it, but students can probably put two and two together and work out what my views are. That said, I’ve had students with political views obviously very different from mine who’ve done excellently in my classes and whom I’ve enjoyed teaching.

I also like to play Devil’s Advocate sometimes just to mix things up a bit. I like to think that students might not always be able to figure out what I really think so easily.

As long as profs are fair in their marking and have respect for logically-held contrary positions, I am OK with them spouting off. All history is taught through a political lens. Lower-year undergrads come in thinking some kind of "True History". Profs need to disabuse that.

Though it's been yonks since I was a student, I only ever wanted a Professor who shared their politics - for someone who knew nothing, it was a way of accessing their world. Reviled or beloved, imagine a Canada without George Grant?

I think the only way for there to be balance is for all profs to share their views, though I know not everyone *wants* to do that.
