The point of these arguments is that they weren’t racist then so as a reward for being good tgen they get to be racist now.

No, I honestly think these conservatives see not being racist as a burden ("Can we do away with affirmative action yet, it's been X years?") and that if you or your ancestors were good in the past you don't have to bear the burden in the present and can be "normal," i.e. racist.
