History shows that when appointed by legislatures, they were far more subservient to corporate interests than they are even now, so I think that argument is based on myth.

That was the way the 17th Amendment was sold by Hearst, et al, but the Senate is far more corrupt now than it ever was prior to the 17th Amendment. They are effectively free agents now who represent the highest bidder.
