A few years back, there was a collective freak-out about free speech issues on college campuses. "Safe spaces," microaggressions, and an ideology which viewed words as potentially harmful weapons and had built-in defenses against any counter-argument.

It's become a regular hobbyhorse on the right, now. The consensus, at least in the fashionable left-of-center online world, is that these criticisms were never really in good faith, or proportionate to any real threat. E.g., sarcastic "this left-wing political correctness" meme.

Now, you'd *think* this argument about proportionality is at least conceding that the crazy students are wrong on the merits. But if you look closely, it never does. The argument is that the proportionality makes the students correct. And that's the POV that troubles me!

A little bit of censorship isn't OK for the right cause--at least, if the idea of free speech matters. And it's not just idiot students. Melissa Click was a professor at the university with our top J-school. Her actions were defended by pundits.

      Which “pundits”?

Going off of memory, I may have overstated my case a bit--this essay is the one that stands out from my mind. https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/race-and-the-free-speech-diversion?mbid=social_twitter …https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/race-and-the-free-speech-diversion?mbid=social_twitter …

Don’t see the defense of Click in either one-what am I missing?

Cobb's essay was the day after the incident--he doesn't mention her but is clearly talking about free speech issues at Missouri.

The day after a prof at a state university threatens a journalist with violence, to talk about how freedoms of speech aren't equal--I read that as a defense. But like I said, overstated a bit.pic.twitter.com/cvpxRr2fKJ
