Close to 200,000 black regulars in the Union army, and untold numbers of irregulars. These neo-Confederates also need a sharp reminder about the Fort Pillow massacre if they don't understand the Confederate standpoint toward the whole idea of black soldiers.

Gen Pat Ceburne's proposal to arm slaves with promise of freedom in winter1864 caused great upset in CSA. Conf govt forcefully rejected it. 1861 NewOrleans an interesting case but free men of color not accepted in CSA. When CSA fled NO, freemen joined Union forces instead.

A tiny number of slaves were allowed to 'enlist' (CSA) toward the very end of the war, when it basically wouldn't have mattered anyway. They never saw combat. And they could only do so with their master's consent, and were obviously not offered manumission in return for service.
