Elizabeth Warren’s “Native American genes” aren’t even definitely “Native American genes,” says a Navajo geneticist.https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/what-make-elizabeth-warrens-dna-test/573205/ …

I think this is the key point: “Native American identity is not one of biology, but of culture. And, crucially, “Native American” is a political designation that confers rights. If that designation becomes tied to a DNA test, it could threaten those rights.” Apples & oranges.

Quanah Parker (Comanche) & John Ross (Cherokee) and Will Rogers (Cherokee) are examples of N.A cultural identity with mixed DNA. But there are also a lot of people with relatives within N.A. culture, but whose descendants were not, by voluntary/involuntary assimilation.

The history of trying to sever N.A. cultural identity is well known, with mandatory boarding schools & other measures. Without making any claim to tribal identity, if one is aware of that history, & doesn’t seek material advantage by it, but mentions it, then what is the harm?

I know I’m entering fraught territory here, but if the idea is that Warren has committed a capital political crime by responding to a political slander by explaining more about her family’s passed-down story of assimilation, then I’d like to understand the crime better.

Who said anything about a “capital political crime,” for heaven’s sake? Criticizing Warren seems to be blasphemy for a lot of folks and they get shirty pretty quick.

But that’s Trump’s argument, I think. I wouldn’t necessarily want Warren as the Democratic nominee. But if this is the argument that disqualifies her from consideration, because the conversation about trying to end “Pocahontas” degenerates, then is that her fault, or ours?

In short, in what way could Warren respond that didn’t reward bad discourse? I am by no means claiming I have an answer. I’m searching for one.

The % accuracy is much lower than you think, and you gave your DNA to a for-profit company. #23andnotme

i think the dna self tests you get at 7 11 would have more credibility than what @SenWarren aka pocahontas did
