This helps explain Trump's hold despite evidence of repeated lies:"Trump does seem to have a Too Big To Fail talent for locking folks in, by deliberately getting them deeper & deeper in epistemic hock." … h/t

The breakdown in civility and our politics occurred when a sitting President couldn't even get a hearing on a Supreme Court nominee for 8 months. Not when someone couldn't eat at Red Hen.

The U.S. has a professional racist and incipient dictator as president - and you wring your hands about “manners?” My teammate

Civility is only as good as the background values it is intended to serve. To call for it now is to demand silence in the face of cruelty and harm, obedience in the face of the gangsterization of our institutions. Courage is needed now not civility!

Of course Harley Davidson is going to shift its production overseas in order to respond to the trade war Trump launches. This US president is the disruptor in chief, finding enemies everywhere but Russia. It's an old method

The popular revolt Navalny’s plotting is unlike any that we’ve seen of late. He’s not aiming to take over the main square of the capital - he’s aiming to mobilise the whole country. In spatial terms, this must be the largest national social movement ever.

Those under assault, as the Hungarian Academy, can be trapped by the rules of the game authoritarians manipulate. As defense uses legal means, the international community, & EU in particular, needs stand by academic freedom & critical & evidenced reason.

1/2 boils down the change to a zero-tolerance immigration policy --> "The problem is, normally if you walk across and say I’m here to claim asylum, they process you, they release you, and get an asylum hearing date in the future."

Pretty disappointing to hear that this is a alum. I would expect better from any Smithie. She's heard from me--and many other Smithies as well, I'll warrant.

Two true things: 1. Obama’s immigration, detention, and deportation policies were bad and cruel (as were Bush 2’s & Clinton’s). 2. Trump’s are much worse. Eg Obama & Bush 2 pushed for the DREAM Act; Trump holds kids hostage for his wall. I’m not sure why this is so confusing.

The foil blankets, the heat, the cages are awful & add another layer of inhumanity. But even if these facilities were outfitted like "boarding schools," the forced separation of these little children from their parents would still be inhumane and unconscionable.

The focus on whether these facilities have air conditioning, or TV is misplaced. It reflects the underlying belief that children & parents of color do not have deep emotional bonds. It is first & foremost the separation of these toddlers frm their parents that is abusive.

Here is my first cartoon as a freelance syndicated cartoonist without a staff job. This story about the immigrant children makes me ashamed to be an American.

When the attorney general used Scripture to justify closing our borders, he operated from a playbook that dates back to —& added to it the evil of making children its prey.

Poles fight to defend the rule of law in their country! Hopefully, there will be the same energy and numbers as a year ago! The situation is more serious.
