It’s official! Next year I will be a fellow at the National Humanities Center. I’ve dreamt of joining since I was a grad student at UNC. Plus, I get to return to Durham, my old stomping grounds.

Babies. Please read. Do not string together terminology you heard on twitter and try to workshop your own theoretical frameworks out of thin air. It don't work like that.

  3. Definitely need to read more about epistemic violence: failure to communicate with someone as if they are knowledgeable and able to converse.... Adding to my reading list "Tracking Epistemic Violence, Tracking Practices of Silencing" by Kristie Dotson

  5. Excited to gain new perspective on bias in medicine from today about "difficult patients" and how bias & racism get operationalized in clinical encounters through epistemic violence & the "normative force of being labeled 'difficult'." Hosted by

We talked about 's work on the inequities present in postpartum pain evaluation & management: and the main thing I thought of during her talk was 's idea of *being considered competent*:

a really nice precis of the talk is below, and I'm so glad to have a name for the type of silencing and forcible wresting-away of the narrative that I've seen in some of my training:

And finally a magnificent lecture from on the construction of the “difficult patient”, and the epistemic violence that silenced and labels patients.

the reconstruction south, one of this country’s great experiments in democratic governance, was powered by countless poor, illiterate men and women. you don’t need a formal education to be a good democratic citizen.

  14. One of my favorite quotes about this reign of terror is that the Gov. Bullock "was obliged by the Ku Klux Klan to resign his governorship and, in his discerning contemplation felt it wise to leave the state." That's gangsta terrorist shit, right there.

Here is my other favorite for the night: the new judges will "uphold the Constitution as written." That statement has no meaning but is solely a way to claim neutrality while implementing an agenda.

👇why we need more public health ethicists! I often tell a story about a woman told to stop smoking by disparities researcher. Woman says 'I live a shitty life. Cigarettes help. Now I will live a shitty life longer bc doc says it's unfair I started smoking at 15.'
