UK publishing is a hostile environment for writers of colour. This is a structural issue not an individual one. However it is perpetuated and reinforced by individuals and organisations. For example, tell me why should I - as a minoritised writer - trust @Soc_of_Authors?pic.twitter.com/AHYydMt7vW

I have repeatedly been told that publishers have economic incentive to support writers who cause harm to minoritised people, cause harm to even children. That may be @panmacmillan @picadorbooks rationale. But isn’t @Soc_of_Authors as a trade union have a different one?

Making it very clear: I am not asking for tesignations or firing or end of contracts (I also know it won’t happen. The powerful always have impunity). I AM asking publishing to confront their complicity and collusion. Esp those like @Soc_of_Authors who like to talk DEI

I have though all weekend about these tweets and given the alacrity and full throatedness with which @Soc_of_Authors bigwig stepped up to support Cl*nchy, a lot of reflection is needed.

Full disclosure: I am not a member @Soc_of_Authors because each time since moving to UK in 2005, that I have considered joining, there has been a public incident that has left in distrusting of them and their commitment to treating me as an equal

          Replying to @ProfSunnySingh @panmacmillan and

This increasingly leaves me feeling very ambivalent about being a member, after years of advocating for other authors to be sure they join. Who is the SoA meant to represent and protect?
