No-one in a population of 12,408 people vaccinated with a single dose of ChAdOx1 nCo-19 was hospitalised with COVID-19 from 22 days after immunisation. This is the most important thing! 76% efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19 is great, but 0 people hospitalised is everything.pic.twitter.com/4Q4iXTH6lN

Finally, reduction in any PCR+ (symptomatic or asymptomatic) of 54% after 2 doses, indicating the potential for reducing transmission. Overall, the Oxford/AZ vaccine has 76% efficacy against symptomatic COVID19 infection, prevents hospitalisation and reduces transmission! 🙂

My questions are as someone who doesn't know much about the immunology behind vaccines, what is the function of the second dose, what are the consequences of delaying or not having it, could there be issues with immunity being sustained over the long-term?

According to a paper today, the benefits of the second dose are a reduction in transmission & a stronger immune response. I'm not sure what the effect of not having it is.https://twitter.com/Coronavirusgoo1/status/1356632576744697858 …

Great news, but I guess the statistical power (though big for a trial!) is relatively low compared to population-wide rollout we're seeing of up to 600k vaccinations per day. Are there any plans to use the national rollout to provide better resolution of relative hosp risk?

Im sure we’ll get that data over time; I see elsewhere data starting to come in from Israel that is looking really good wrt reducing serious infections in those vaccinated

I see it now. "There were no hospitalisations in the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 group after the initial 21 day exclusion period, and 15 in the control group." Thanks.
