I have been thinking of things that need to be done to elevate this work/change the fields. Much of this is
#ShakeRace specific, but some have broader applications. /2Näytä tämä ketju -
For EM, there is a welcome growth on works on “race.” However, a fair few don’t actually engage with CRT, QOC, critique, Black feminism or other forms of anti-racist analysis. (You can see this in the works added to the EMRS bibliography.) /3

Peter and I alluded to this in the introduction to SQ. 67.1. At the time, I toyed w/suggesting a name change to distinguish between these scholarly arenas, but was loath to just add “Critical” to “Early Modern Race Studies.” /4pic.twitter.com/eJyyqkdRVU

Still haven’t thought of another name to distinguish for folks new to the field the work responsive to the intellectual geneaology(!?) and political investments of what I have been calling EMRS. 5/

For the purposes of this thread, will use Critical Early Race Studies which has the benefit of including Classical, Medieval & EM. Could just as easily be Early Critical Race Studies or even better, something else entirely /6

I think we can do more to help along people who want to do more antiracist
#ShakeRace work. Ppl have found the crowdsourced Pre 2000 annotated bibliography Hannah & I started very helpful http://bit.ly/EMRSBib . but it has become a little defuse & we need a LOT more resources /7Näytä tämä ketju -
@AmbereenDadhaboy’s tweet about one of my early essays reminded me that we probably need an annotated bibliography of foundational works in the field as well. https://twitter.com/ProfKFH/status/1161962301328699392?s=20 … /8

changing "race" historiography:
@ElyzabethGrace & I for years bemoaned lack of attention to CERS by established CRT scholars. This is lessening, but absence is still notable. How do we change what G. Heng calls the "grand recit that reifies modernity as telos and origin”? /9Näytä tämä ketju -
more public circulation of this scholarship (I hope) would help. Maybe a public dialogue?? /10

Huge interest in these works 4 teaching. We need a curated teaching resource with shorter essays for colleges & for secondary ed. Forthcoming
@wbhyman & Hillary Eklund volume will be invaluable. https://twitter.com/wbhyman/status/1152219839064399873?s=20 … /11Näytä tämä ketju -
But something open-source & free would really get the word out. IMHO "Shakespeare and Black America cluster" ed by me &
@patriciaacahill will also be useful, but isn’t open-source & is very specific. --But gloriously black. /12pic.twitter.com/jfpkN5TvJaNäytä tämä ketju -
A resource with specific assignments and pedagogical tips/advice would be super helpful. /13

While on open source tip,
@BCRWTweets online journal *Scholar and Feminist Online* is referreed, open source, and v. open to format useful for classroom. How about a special issue on “Race and Royalty” ed by@MiraAssafK or "Race and Indigeneity" by@aewaiwhy ewaiwhy /14Näytä tämä ketju -
We also need
#Wikipedia entries. My@ShangeWorlds worked opened my eyes to how bad Wikipedia is on topics related to Race, POC & blackness. (Hint: editing Wikipedia is a great classroom assignment, esp if you have fab librarian mentors). /15Näytä tämä ketju -
Other possibilities
@Zotero or@Wikipedia Hackathon devoted to Critical Early Race Studies at future#RaceB4Race. /16Näytä tämä ketju -
Also, how can make this work usable for writers, actors, directors and other theater folx?
@The_Globe#ShakespeareAndRace showed a hunger there. Plus, there are#ShakeRace archival riches that could be turned into creative works! /16.5 (told y'all I suck at this)Näytä tämä ketju -
BTW, still thinking abt ongoing
#ShakeRace/SAA reading group that takes up a big modern text/significant articles in the field/s. Many only get to read these w/students (if that) & not w/ other#RaceB4Race scholars. /18Näytä tämä ketju -
Is that a workshop? How can we do this so that the work is recognized, but not burdensome? /19

Back to subfields_EMRS and critical indigenous studies: As
@aewaiwhy has generously pointed it out, although we in ECRS imagine ourselves as capacious, some of our grounding#Shakerace assumptions and metaphors erase or are appropriative—down to the use of “race” itself. /20Näytä tämä ketju -
Conversely, (IMHO) too often EM animal studies & OOO imagine themselves as including race & indigeneity, but frequently do not. The metaphors and analogies in some cases evoke —or at worst reproduce — the historic dehumanization of minoritized and indigenous peoples. /21

Ima stop & hope to hear your thoughts. Taking brief Twitterland break, but we have a week —and a few years--to get in
#RaceB4Race formation. Sending#ShakeRace love to all y’all trying to get anti-racist this semester and forever and ever. /22 STILL HATE DESKTOP TWITTER /finispic.twitter.com/zTeoMgWb80Näytä tämä ketju
