    I accept Brexit as it is a fait accompli - I have no choice - but I will never ‘embrace’ or ‘get behind’ this act of national self-harm. Instead I will work towards the country rejoining the EU. The way I vote in future will be directly influenced by policies on Brexit on offer.

    They really are determined not to take the blame for anything are they? It’s our fault. We left. And it’s the government’s fault for not wanting free trade. Tell who’s fault this isn’t, and that’s the EU’s. But the dog whistle brigade don’t care about that

    My favourites are by Paul Addison, and by Geoffrey Best - two books on WSC each.

    Roy Jenkins wrote the best political bio; Richard Holmes did a good military bio (as did Con Coughlin); Sonia Purnell's First Lady gives us Clemmie (a vital support). Martin Gilbert's endless volumes give us the facts, but less analysis. Easily best all-rounder is Andrew Roberts

    Yesterday, small groups of students in were given the name of a cemetery on the Western Front and an hour to produce biographies of someone buried there using the digital resources at their disposal. They did an extraordinary job.

    Sadly, he died when I was 12, so I never got to ask him about the exact circumstances. But one of his aunts somehow came into a lot of money (her estate was worth over £2000 when she died in 1952), so I wonder if she could have funded his education.

    The real crunch will come in 11 months time, and the end of the transition period

    I’m a bit disappointed with today so far, to be honest. I reckon I was promised that either a) the world would end; or b) we’d be living in a brave new world. So far, I have to say, it seems pretty much like yesterday. Except rugby on TV this afternoon: that’s good.

    ‘History is written by the victors’. Lazy and inaccurate cliche.

    History is written by the victors so today belongs to those who advocate Brexit. The rest of us should hope and work for a Brexit that is better than we fear. But there is no reason to dilute our central case: to be pro-European is to be pro-British.
