One way to get data to conduct social network analysis is to fund those companies at the outset and then lock in the data streams. Something to watch. Palantir invested $25 million in Faraday Future - The Verge

Anyone have the transcripts or pleadings from the various Frye hearings etc. that convinced judges to let the data in as expert evidence? Any case names?

New GAO report on shows what happens when Congress fails to act. Train is rolling down the tracks folks… I don’t see federal brakes.

It’s like watching a corporate version of predictive policing but for targeting the poor. In retrospect, Target might need a different name.

This ⁦⁩ analysis links Shotspotter to similar 4th Amendment problems with predictive policing. Notable that police used the aggregate Shotspotter info in their reports. We went a decade with police not mentioning in reports.

This is a solid summary of the problems with Shotspotter in Chicago. It should be a warning to police tech companies about what happens when you don’t proactively address the foreseeable racial justice/civil liberties impacts of the tech.

But… there may well be way too many gunshots in Chicago, and Shotspotter may be picking up that reality. The problem comes in trying to operationalize police strategy based on data without thinking though the impacts. Big Data policing needs to think through the impacts.

Two important notes on this IG report. First, there does not seem to be value in Shotspotter as an investigative technology (to arrest individuals with guns). Second, despite this reality, the presence of gunshot detection primes officers to perceive the area as dangerous. But…

Funny how every time there is an IG report on big data policing, the IG finds it doesn’t work as promised and negativity alters policing. Maybe we should be doing this due diligence before rolling out . Worth reading .

Confused about the first few days of law school? It’s okay. Just realize there is a “law” of law school and you can master the game.

There should be a charity set up that collects the author/book royalty checks that are so insultingly small that it would be better not to receive them. Collectively maybe there is money for good in the humiliating sadness of paltry book royalties.
