2016: I sue for records on how the “heat list” is generated. Profiling algorithm and all that goes into it. 2018: I (and other parties I allow to join the suit) drop suit after getting back nothing but scraps of documents 2019: heat list quietly ended

This highlights the issues raised by person-based predictive policing (especially when there's a bias toward using police over mental health professionals, community leaders, etc.) It's also a good reminder to read 's great book on pred pol

"BriefCam overlays footage of events happening at different times as if they are appearing simultaneously." It's used by LE in Detroit, Hartford, Chicago, and Springfield (among others).

Using a feature called Video Synopsis, BriefCam overlays footage of events happening at different times as if they are appearing simultaneously. For example, if several people walked past a camera at 12:30 p.m., 12:40 p.m., and 12:50 p.m., BriefCam will aggregate their images into a single scene. Investigators can view all footage of interest from a given day in minutes instead of hours.

Not sure this is “predictive policing” but is clearly going all in with big data policing tech. With Persistent ” in the sky and data driven predictions all I can say is I hope Baltimore has done the front end risk analysis.

It was great to hear Chief Nisleit endorse need for a surveillance tech vetting ordinance at Public Safety Committee. Good police understand community trust is necessary for effective police work. Public safety and privacy is not either/or decision. We can have both.

This is the future. If you are running a city or police department and not getting this, you should. The alternative is going to be a ban on the tech, period. So prepare ahead, get public input, draft sane use policy, ideally get legislative sign off.

Facial recognition + predictive policing = repeating the same mistakes we should have learned five years ago or more. Seriously, is anyone paying attention to the demonstrated problems with both.
