Update: Can't use any of those photos for my book cover, after all. Licensing issue, long story. So... How about this one, for a book on campaign visits? I took it at a Romney/Ryan rally in 2012. (Too old?)

My book on presidential campaign visits ("I'm Here to Ask for Your Vote") is coming out this fall. Time to pick an image for the cover. Which one?

Chapters? (cont’d) 4—Empirical analysis: Veepstakes coverage, 2000-2016 (yikes) 5—Empirical analysis: Veepstakes coverage, 2020 (better—but not quite there) 6—Conclusion: Let’s do better. Here’s how…

Profiles of VP candidates are far more likely to discuss potential electoral advantages (e.g., geographic, demographic) than governing ability. Message to audience: Pick someone who can help you win! Who cares whether VP can help govern? (Me: Boo—VPs matter!)

Questions: Do journalists focus too much on electoral (vs. governing) considerations when discussing potential VP candidates? Do they treat it like a parlor game? Short answer: Yup. And that needs to change.

Approved for sabbatical this fall--woohoo! I'll be in New England doing archival research for a book project on the 1924 presidential election.

One of my favorite part of my campaign visits book is sharing war stories about what it took to build a dataset from scratch (inc. the exact address where each visit took place).

Your regular reminder that it’s great to be done with teaching, but posting pictures of students in your lecture may not actually be ok per university policy, and always needs some care if the students don’t explicitly opt in/consent to it. Same with posting their work etc.

Exited to see our out at ! Why did GOP not only fail to flip the U.S. Senate but mange to lose ground in 2022 midterms? Using new candidate quality data, Seon & I agree with McConnell—perhaps it was candidate quality! 1/2

Hot take: It's really nice to grade students who nail every assignment throughout the semester. But nothing beats seeing a student who has struggled with earlier assignments work hard to improve and nail the big ones at the end.

One of the problems with blinded review is that you can't get in touch with a reviewer to ask: "Just curious--and no disrespect--what exactly is wrong with you?"

I love reviewing book manuscripts, because it is: 1) legitimate, actual work, and 2) what I'd want to be reading for fun anyway. Oh, and bonus: getting paid in books. Good gig.

Trump’s popularity has dropped more in the last week—among Americans, generally, and Republicans, specifically—than it did after January 6. Not sure it will last, we’ll see. But something is different this time.

Remarkable. The 2022 election sent Trump's favorable rating from an already low 38% down to 33%. Among Republicans, Trump's favorable rating went from 81% to 71%, the lowest it's been since before the 2016 election. civiqs.com/results/trump_

If you want to know what message discipline sounds like, just listen to Sherrod Brown from one election to the next.
