Remember, your friends won’t see your tweets about Liz Truss’s essay, because they have better things to do on a Saturday night, but Liz Truss is reading them all.

The problem with the post-mortem is it is quite hard to disentangle precisely who Truss blames for the collapse of her govt, what they did wrong, and how they are connected. There is a lot of reliance on notions of "consensus" and "orthodoxy", and broad links between actors.

Truss also blames the “wider orthodox economic ecosystem”. OK, fine, what exactly are your plans for operating outside of that ecosystem? I might as well say it was a great idea to rip out my central heating but the Scottish weather just wasn’t ready for my vision.

This strategy is no real use to Truss personally - in the unlikely event she had some sort of comeback hope - because she says it’s because she’s a bad communicator, not that she made a one-off mistake. It’s only of use to people who want to do Trussism without Truss.

Ah right, I’ve read the essay now and Truss’s acknowledged mistakes were (a) maybe the mini-budget should have been a few days later (but only maybe) and (b) she didn’t communicate well enough how brilliant the plan was.

Perhaps there is something in the essay, but it’s noticeable that the write-up includes Truss saying she was not “blameless” but without actually identifying anything she did wrong.

You might wonder why I am training very hard at sprinting these days, but the answer is simple: my strategy for winning the London Marathon is to be only ten seconds behind at the 26 mile mark and outpace my competitors from there.

Why do the Tories need £25 million?
The election strategy is Sunak’s performance and an improving economy cut the Labour poll lead to 5-10 points by the start of campaign
They then need the most aggressive and expensive air war ever to make up the rest

The issue of 16 year old candidates is a difficult one and one I don't yet have a view on, but the general tenor of this column is yet another instance of the absolute contempt that older generations hold youth in when it comes to democracy. Appalling.

According to Politico, Truss “intimated that she did not trust her successor, Rishi Sunak, a more technocratic Tory, to do the job” and fine, but this is not something you deserve to be listened to on if you swiftly crash the markets and your poll ratings and quit in disgrace.

(Maybe it’s different in different disciplines?) One of my referees for a previous job, well aware of this, wrote me a reference which was only two lines long, which worked out well but in retrospect was a bit of a risk to take with someone else’s career…

Pre-picket line thought: one thing academia could do collectively to reduce workload is try to reduce the use of references. I’m not convinced they make much difference: people invariably write positive references and they don’t end up much use for distinguishing candidates.

Academic jobs that demand reference letters before an interview should be forced to create a website where applicants can read anonymous posts by current staff reviewing the work conditions at the department.

It’s usual, I think, for these letters to talk about the great things the government has done (albeit picking things connected to the author). Zahawi doesn’t even bother praising the government or PM: he’s just written a letter about how great he is.
