He "grinds" (which is NOT a thing in d&d) solo. A pack of 4 displacer beasts overwhelm and kill him. It's up to you to make him feel vulnerable. Use magic. Make him realize he is nothing without the others.https://twitter.com/GuyGorby/status/940069825958645760 …

@ProJared I'm Dming this campaign and I have a problem with one player. He is just to powerful, he is an early 5e barb. He demolishes every challenge I give him. When they have a choice on what do to next, he wants to grind in the forest. He will leave the group to do it. Help!

Villager walks into the woods a few times a week to grind small woodland animals for sustenance. Is now a level 12 ranger.

Alternatively, let him know he's playing the wrong game. He's only playing for himself and letting him even attempt going off alone takes away from everyone else at the table. Tell him he can grind off screen (not taking up table time) while you DM for everyone else.

Let him see how boring it is to have to sit out of the experience. If you really want to kick him in the shins, when you finally get back to him tell him that he couldn't find anything 4 grinding and lvl up the rest of the party instead. (You can always lvl him back up l8r)

Alternatively, a Young/slightly younger AdultGreen Dragon is seeking territory to call his own. It so happens to be this forest. The Barb runs into the dragon. Death ensues.

This is why I or my GM never awards individual experience, but party exp. In games like Rogue Trader, players can do individual things on the ship. But it is usually beneficial for the group.

Any long range cantrip Eldritch Blast/Firebolt paired with Misty Step as a bonus action so the spell caster can teleport and move even more after casting. 2+ enemies with that running around him should be enough to scare him back to the group. They return together and win!

yeah, I don't think you'll find anyone trying to "grind" in D&D unless there's some crazy meta gaming going on. Perhaps the DM @GuyGorby should audit his xp awarding 🤔

Harsh but fair. Especially in a a GROUP based role-playing game. He may not be playing wrong, but sounds like he's playing in the wrong group. Sounds like your stereotypical munchkin.

Force him into a situation where his weaknesses are played up, make him realize that he needs the rest of the party. Could put him in a situation to nullify his magics for a bit perhaps and make him have to think outside the box.

I think my DM needs some lessons from you. I'm going to point him in the direction of your videos from either last year or the year before where you explained how to make a good dungeon. We get through them too fast and he gets mad. It's too easy.
