Gen 2 is the least "casual" of the Pokemon games, for the main story content, I think. It hands you nothing. Want the new types? Better work for it. Want to level up? Better work for it. Want evo-stones? Better work for it. Want to beat Red? Better do it under-leveled.
I once spent three and half hours using "Thief" on wild Magnemites so that I could get a Metal Coat to evolve a Scyther into Scizor.
It’s what holds Gen 2 back for me. I want to use a wonderful Johto team, but almost half of these Pokémon are weak as hell. The level balancing is also really undercooked even in HGSS. I can never bring myself to beat Red or do Kanto post game because of these struggles!
Tbh Gen 2 is just that, Gen 2. Its a game that's almost 20 years old now, and yeah it has its faults. But that doesn't mean that it doesn't have things that the newer games/gens can learn from it.

I did this not a month ago for a razor claw to evolve my Sneasel.
I wanted some light clay in gen 6.....it nearly drove me insane xD

God I got lucky it was only one.
I've spent even more time only to fail and give up after several more hours beyond that. Life can be cruel sometimes.
