I appreciate the spirit of this article, but it fails on a number of levels to understand ethical ways to monetize data - especially in the multi-hundred billion dollar world of research (market, health, academic, etc). In research, the goal is aggregated, anonymized insights.

While there are new fly by night startups who shouldn’t necessarily be trusted, there are a number that have been looking at this problem for years and have committed themselves to ethical, privacy preserving approaches that can be both technically and legally enforced.

Let's see: will the low income people get paid for their data at the same rate as high incomers? Or better question, will the pay depend on how much you and where you spend? Paying to spy on people only deepens the mess we are in!! Which genius thought this?
