Imagine if Republicans had conspired with the Bush administration & FBI to sabotage Obama by spying on & smearing him as a Russian agent based on a fake dossier written by a foreign spy who hated Obama & wanted to stop him becoming president.

I’ve always thought the key wiggle-room phrase here is “directed at him.” They likely never had a warrant on Trump specifically, but were able to eavesdrop on him & associates as a byproduct of the Carter Page warrants.
