Whether we call it a "protest" or a tantrum, the resulting act accomplishes nothing in this instance and undermines the original purpose for said tantrum. This is an embarrassment to our rich history of meaningful protests. This plays into his messaging to his base and beyond

In this specific case, with someone who relishes attention, refusing to be a part of his audience sends a very powerful message.
