This is a really important point that @ewarren is making: the ultra-rich make their money off accumulated wealth not income. That’s why you have to tax wealth not just income.

Right. By the way a VAT tax is regressive as rich people don’t spend the wealth that is accumulating. Doesn’t solve the problem unless you have big rebates for low income folks which will also increase bureaucracy.

Key is to define capital, labor as separate from natural resources, debt & land property. The proper definition needs to be restored so that unearned income is taxed progressively & the rates indexed to inflation.

It’s embarrassing the perks people get when you’re already well off. Free air miles, credit card discounts, free gas and groceries, better loan rates and access to programs make more money. The more you spend the more you can get.
