This isn’t to prop up wobbly newspapers or denigrate online publications. I’m just saying these publications don’t have the resources to complete, with a few exceptions.

I’m a big fan of online journalism sites, especially Propublica, Reveal and what my former colleague Dylan Smith is doing in Tucson. But the argument here is nonsense. Online publications aren’t competing with daily newspapers on accountability journalism in significant markets.

How about CalMatters? It has poached Bee talent and regularly out-reports the Bee on state news.

It’s a little different because the article was about local journalism. CalMatters is doing statewide journalism. And doing it quite well.

I'm disappointed with Poynter's judgment in publishing this self-proclaimed "news" organization's publicity release disguised in a news-story format. There are no verified data or facts supporting the lede, as any journalist can see.
