Photo selection for news stories. Photos aren't always neutral (if ever), so what are the ethical considerations of picking one photo over another?

Homelessness and poverty, in-depth, not as sound bites; Dorothea Lange. The poor and homeless are the new lepers, as are people with severe mental illness.

Cover how photojournalists make less money and have less regular gigs than writers. (When you consider cost of equipment, higher physical risk, etc.) If a photoj is a freelancer, there is a good chance that they shoot weddings to pay the bills.
-
On risk: Photojs have to be "in the shit" as it were (protests, conflicts, etc) to be able to file the story. Writers don't have to be. Photojournalism is an undervalued craft when it comes to pay, imo.
-
I'd love to see data on compensation of photojournalists to writers/editors for both staff and freelancers to either confirm or deny my perceptions of the market.
