Yesterday we published a story about free images that made a lot of people really angry and upset. So today we asked Poynter president @neilbrowntimes to write his thoughts on this and how we go forward. http://poy.nu/2Eg744H  @NPPA @gawlowski @suelmorrow @melissalyttle

Please realize this isn't about photojournalists getting offended. We didn't get our feelings hurt PhotoJ's response is your fellow journalists being concerned that we do our readers/communities a genuine disservice by sidelining visual journalism. This is about ALL journalism

“The reality of digital storytelling is that articles without images are not as competitive.” WHICH. IS. WHY. YOU. NEED. TO. PAY. FOR. PHOTOS. How do you still not get it?

You also need to remember that photographers are not simply there to illustrate reporter's work. Many times, with leading publications, writers have been asked to write about stories I've been reporting & photographing. Or follow leads I found, working with "my" writer.

Everyone in the newsroom must be involved in how our publications are put together visually, for maximum impact. Locally sourced photos and stories work together when unity is in place and visual effectiveness of the entire package is achieved. Collaboration and continuity.

It's also good for the designer and photog to coordinate and see what the layout will be for the night so a last-second redesign isn't required.

It drives me crazy whe I see a picture of a fire engine from Germany when it’s a local story about a fire. To often it happen and really dulls credibility with the reading public.

Agreed. It's our job to add clarity, not confusion. We need to be very cautious of treating the addition of photos as simply a checkbox in a task list. A photo should be seen as the content within it, not just a rectangle.

Part of the deeper problem is the fissure between writer and photographer. Writers when building a story can cultivate their personal network of photogs and vise versa. Start thinking images from the beginning or at least approach a photog w/ur ideas and go from there.

It’s not the “cold, practical” terms that has upset the visual journalism community and framing it as such is both rudely dismissive and completely missing the point. It is clear you aren’t interested in learning from this mistake. Disappointing, but not surprising.

For such a long time, newspapers did just that. Plug a photo in here, in there, to break up the gray. It’s common practice today, still. The education of visuals must start from those that are in the trenches.

Matter of fact, why not do a story on the value that we bring? Or a story how reporters can help themselves with making their own images. Stop promoting this fallacy that we don’t bring value to newsrooms.
