Apparently we struck a really raw nerve today in the photojournalism community when we published a piece about free photo sites and tools for newsrooms that are strapped for resources. (Thread)

“One of Poynter's biggest roles is to serve as a hub for conversation about journalism. I think if we're seeing things one way and they're seeing things another, it's probably only going to help us to host both sides of that conversation.”

@Poynter I do not advocate taking down the article. However, I would be happy to work with@thekalish and@NPPA to write a follow up that can help move this conversation forward. In general, please include visual journalists in the conversation when discussing visual journalism. -
Hi all. We hear you. Talked with
@suelmorrow this afternoon, and we're working on publishing a piece that addresses your concerns. Appreciate your outreach. -
You should also talk to Santiago Lyon from Adobe Stock. He ran the a major wore service’s photo operation and now runs the kind of service you suggested using. He’d probably have incredible insight.
-
Thanks. We'll do just that.
-
And thanks for tolerating the typos.

I didn't initially support the article be taken down but
@Poynter should remove it. There are things in it that could get orgs in serious copyright trouble. It's misinformation now being shared by other writing orgs.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I agree, don’t take it down. It is a great illustration of how bad we have let it become. Of how disconnected and broken our entire industry has gotten. But seriously, what were you guys thinking?

I think clarification and an explanation as to why having a visuals staff is important and why commission work is also valueable. The article sends the wrong message. It says “you could hire people to do incredible work, but this is easier. And cheaper” you get what you pay for.

The mission of
@Poynter is to encourage best practices in journalism. This article in no way, shape or form describes best practices. It is a guide to what is destroying visual journalism...Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

The web, even more so than print, is driven by images. Yet in my decade-plus in metro newsrooms, I have seen all visual professionals shortchanged and marginalized more and more. It’s humiliating that Poynter thinks we aren’t worth the trouble at all.

Checking for copyright information on Flickr isn't the safest bet. Purchasing a license is. The technology for discovering stolen images on the web has vastly improved. Organizations will be surprised in the coming years the huge number of infringement notices they will receive.
