If newspapers were invented today, position of "copy editor" wouldn't exist. Stories on website can be easily be updated/corrected later.

Today's copy editors also are proofreaders. They don't just catch typos. More important are errors of facts, things that bring lawsuits
NYT has been doing an excellent job of providing a model for future of news. Would love to see them do same with invaluable editing staff
The removal of mediation between reporter and public will mean more problematic "scoops", more retractions, more ammo for enemies of "MSM"
